Romanians ranked third in terms of travel expenditure from Hungary. Germans were the largest group of foreign tourists from Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece last year.

According to the Budapest Business Magazine, Romanians ranked third in foreign tourist spending in Hungary in 2023, amounting to HUF 281 billion (EUR 750 million).

In this regard, German tourists ranked first, having spent 476 billion forints (1.27 billion euros) in the country last year. Austria was second with 466 billion forints.

American tourists spent HUF 139 billion.

2023 was a record year for Hungarian tourism. About 16 million foreign tourists spent 41 million nights in Hungarian accommodation units. The largest group of foreign tourists were Slovaks, with more than 9 million people, followed by Romanians and Austrians.

Last summer, Slovaks were the most popular nationality for day trips, followed by Romanians and Austrians, but Austrians spent the most. In contrast, Austrians were most likely to travel for five days or more.

Total revenues of tourism units reached HUF 860 billion (EUR 2.2 billion), up 23% from 2022.

In Poland, the number of foreign tourists reached 6,526,000 in the period from January to November 2023, compared to 5,329,000 in the same period of the previous year. Germans ranked first with 1,500,000, followed by Ukrainians (nearly 858,000), British (588,000), Americans (44,200), Czechs (324,000) and Italians (181,000), according to the German Central Statistical Office. The markets that saw the largest increase in the number of tourists to Poland compared to before the pandemic were the Czech Republic, Lithuania, the United States, Slovakia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Germans were also the largest group of foreign tourists to the Czech Republic last year. Between January and December 2023, the number of German tourists reached 2.3 million, accounting for a quarter of the total number of foreign tourists. Slovakia came in second with 867,000 tourists, followed by the United Kingdom with 759,000 tourists. Tourism-review.com noted that Poles, Americans and Italians were the most frequent visitors.

About four in ten tourists who visited the Czech Republic last year came from neighboring countries.

Germany was also the country of origin of the largest group of foreign tourists to Greece in 2023, with 4 million tourists. It was followed by the United Kingdom, which had a similar number of foreign tourists visiting Greece last year.

In the case of Croatia, Germany leads in terms of overnight stays with 23.6 million.

In 2023, revenue from foreign tourists reached 14.6 billion euros, an increase of 11.4% year-on-year.
