Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) leader Enock Kamzingeni Chihana has condemned the ongoing repression, harassment and arbitrary arrests of freedom fighters and opposition leaders, saying it is a testament to the “dead and dark” legacy of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
“It is truly sad that while the people of Malawians are mourning the death of the late Vice President Dr. Solosi Klaus Chilma, the government has decided to crack down on opposition leaders and human rights activists and deprive them of their freedom,” Chihana said.
Chihana added: “It is a great travesty of the government to arrest someone like Kamlepo Kalua, who some thought would be more lenient given the way it came to power in the first place.”
“It is a known fact that the so-called Tonse Alliance government came to power through protests, which were even criminal in nature and people’s properties were looted, but the government did not arrest anyone. I am very unhappy with Chakwera and his callous team,” Chihana criticised.
“The only reason these two were arrested is because they were against the government’s stance on the plane clash, which even our president said he had a problem with. If the president has a problem with the plane clash, what problem does he have with the hawkers or the common man?” Chihana asked.

“These mass arbitrary arrests and detentions of political activists and freedom defenders will have a price to pay. But what I can assure the people of Malawians is that intimidation will not be seen as a means of development,” Chihana warned.
Chihana described Kamlepo as “a man with a big heart who had fought many battles in his life and never lost one.”
Both Kamlepo Kalua and Bon Kalindo face charges of spreading false information in cyberspace.
The AFORD leader assured the people of Malawians that intimidation tactics would not prevail in the elections and stressed that development and freedom were at stake.
