Solidarjetà will cover the legal costs of its member Aleksandar Vukoje, whose landlord cut off his water and electricity supply.
On Sunday, the union organized a solidarity demonstration outside Alexander’s apartment in Swiggy after his landlord illegally entered his property and cut off water and electricity.
“My sense of security has been completely destroyed,” he said. “The landlord violently broke into my apartment and threatened my life. He cut off my water and electricity after this horrific incident.”
Alexander said he sought protection and justice from the police, but it was not until his third attempt, with the help of the Solidarjetà trade union, that he was able to report the crime.
“No one should have to face violence and intimidation in their own home. No one should be left in the dark — literally and figuratively — without the support of their community,” he said.
Johanna MacRae, a representative for the union’s tenant section, said the landlord had been illegally evicting tenants and disconnecting water and electricity with impunity.
She said: “What is the point of section 85 of the Criminal Code if landlords are allowed to continue to enforce the law themselves with complete impunity?”
Gabriel Apap, the union’s secretary-treasurer, thanked everyone for participating in Sunday’s solidarity protest.
“As a union, we believe that when one of us hurts, we all hurt. Your support and solidarity with our member and friend Alexander means so much,” he said.
Apap announced that Solidarity would pay Alexander’s legal fees and encouraged people to join the union, donate to its policies and campaign funds, or leave a donation.
“These financial contributions will not only help us ensure justice for Alexander’s case, but will also be an investment in improving the rights of workers and tenants in Malta. Only when we dare to fight, we dare to win.”
