Furious Scotland manager Steve Clarke blasted the decision not to award his side a penalty as they were knocked out of Euro 2024 in dramatic fashion.
With just over 10 minutes remaining in Stuttgart’s game against Hungary, substitute Stuart Armstrong went down in the Hungarian penalty area under pressure from Willy Orban.
However, Argentinian referee Facundo Tello signalled for play to continue, while VAR Alejandro Hernandez chose not to intervene.
“The most crucial moment in the game for me was the penalty,” Clarke told BBC Sport. “It was 100 per cent a penalty.
“Someone has to explain why that’s not the case, otherwise I would think there’s something wrong.
“I don’t understand how VAR could look at that call and say it wasn’t a penalty.”
Former England striker and BBC pundit Alan Shearer also believed Scotland should have been awarded a penalty.
“It was a terrible decision,” he said. “For me, it was a penalty all day long.”
