World Bank ranks Botswana as a high-risk country for women

The World Bank has ranked Botswana as a high-risk country for women due to its long-standing failure to address gender-based violence.

The World Bank had to rank the country as one of the unsafe places for women in its latest report, Women, Business and the Law 2024, due to the country’s negligible progress in achieving equal treatment of women under the law.

These findings and reports highlight that Botswana is becoming increasingly unsafe for women. As a result, international organizations have urged Botswana to implement comprehensive mechanisms to address violence against women, including dedicated procedures to deal with cases of sexual harassment.
