Palau President Soulanger Whipps stressed the importance of a diversified economy, especially tourism, to the country’s economic security and resilience.
Recent arrival data shows a significant shift in visitor demographics. While China remains the largest single source market, its share has fallen from 50% to about 25%. The decline coincides with China’s June 7 travel warning, which some see as retaliation for President Whipps’ accusations that Chinese cyberattacks undermined Palau’s financial system.
In this regard, President Whipps highlighted efforts to establish new routes with airlines from Australia, Singapore, Japan and China, aimed at diversifying the tourist base. “By attracting tourists from a wider range of destinations, we are more resilient,” he said.
President Whipps further condemned China’s use of tourism as a political weapon and reiterated that economic diversification is vital to Palau’s long-term economic security. (By LN Reklai)
