Palau Koror – In 2022, co-founders Benina Berger and Tati founded the local non-governmental organization (NGO) AD HOC Art Center. AD HOC provides a space for artists and experienced art enthusiasts to lead art activities for children, teenagers and adults.
The center, currently housed in Urur Labs, sponsored by PCC, fits in with Berger’s background in art, music and dance. Berger also serves as president of AD HOC, with ties to the Museo Nacional del Belau. The name “AD HOC” reflects the Latin meaning of “to create out of a fundamental need,” emphasizing the inherent need to make art. Berger emphasizes the nature of inspiration in the spontaneity of art.
As their name suggests, the AD HOC team focuses on collaborative art making and sharing. They are passionate about the growing appreciation of the arts in the Palau community.
Weekly events cater to different audiences
AD HOC offers a variety of arts experiences, including performing arts, applied arts, and visual arts. Their weekly events are held on Tuesdays at 6:00 PM, and each event is targeted at a different age group.
Activities in June included star weaving for all ages (led by Lorraine from AD HOC) and wreath weaving for teens and adults (led by Jennifer). On June 18, Henry hosted a Tapa Art Workshop for adults, introducing participants to traditional Samoan art and culture. Attendees enjoyed learning new skills, creating their own Tapa paintings, and fostering community connections. The event brought back childhood art memories for some participants.
Limited places, personalized guidance
The final event in June is scheduled for June 25 and will be a children’s acrylic painting class led by Miel. Limited to 10 participants, registration can be made by expressing interest through Facebook Messenger. The $5 registration fee includes art supplies.
During the event, facilitators prioritize building meaningful connections with participants. The limited number of participants allows for personalized instruction and exploration of personal artistic styles rather than replicating established works.
Seek support, volunteer
Going forward, AD HOC seeks support to maintain art supplies and provide transportation assistance for hosts and assistants. The organization welcomes individuals who are passionate about art and sharing it with others to join its team as hosts or assistants. Contact can be made via Facebook Messenger or email (info@adhoccenter.com).
AD HOC is motivated by positive feedback from parents who wish their children had similar opportunities and participants who enjoy exploring new creative outlets. Their events also raise awareness of the arts as a viable career path. AD HOC looks forward to continuing to provide engaging arts experiences to the community.
