New Delhi: The death toll from consuming toxic alcohol in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has risen to 54, with more than 100 people still receiving treatment in hospitals, government officials said on Saturday (June 22).
Nearly 200 people have been treated for symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea since Wednesday in Karakurichi district, about 250 km from the state capital Chennai, after consuming liquor laced with methanol.
Senior district officer MS Prasanth said law enforcement officials probing the incident have arrested seven persons, adding that they were taking follow-up action against liquor sellers and brewers in the area.
Deaths from consuming illegally produced alcoholic beverages, often called country liquor, are common in India, and despite public demands for a crackdown on these peddlers, few can afford branded spirits.
The state government said it was taking steps to identify those involved in the production of methanol, a toxic chemical commonly used for industrial purposes.
