Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda formally endorsed 57-year-old M.Rutte in April.
His victory in the race for NATO’s top job became clear last Thursday when Romanian President Klaus Iohannis withdrew from the race.
The new secretary-general is likely to be formally elected in the coming days or weeks. Rutte will become the fourth Dutchman to become the organization’s top diplomat.
