Several doctors at the Institute of Oncology in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, have been removed from their posts. The news was announced by the Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco, who recalled the search of the medical institution in July 2023 in a case of passive and active corruption. At that time, several doctors, some of whom held managerial positions, were suspected of asking for and receiving illegal payments from patients for providing medical services that were supposed to be provided free of charge, IPN reported.
The minister said that after searching the suspects’ homes, offices and cars, cash and different currencies of the lei were seized, as well as registers of those who received medical assistance. Employees were subjected to large-scale searches. The investigation is now closed and the materials have been handed over to institutions and courts. The Institute of Oncology terminated their employment contracts. “I hope this is a clear signal for the entire medical system: no one can reach into the pockets of parents, grandparents, brothers, neighbors, friends. If they are not your parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, remember that they are still someone’s. Life is priceless, because we doctors measure it at a certain price. We are faced with a greater mission – to save it”, said Alla Nemerenko. A year ago, officials of the National Anti-Corruption Center and anti-corruption prosecutors raided the offices and homes of several doctors of the Institute of Oncology. The deputy director of the Diagnostic and Consulting Center and three department heads were investigated for systematically demanding compensation for free medical services.
