Apia, Samoa, 21 June 2024 – Emerging technology company Tamarix Group has partnered with several entities to establish its first strategic future office in the South Pacific.
This week, the group opened an office in Samoa and plans to open offices in other island nations soon.
“The idea came from a conversation with Misa Tovia Vaaelua, For Good’s vice president of technology at Crayon Solutions, a Norwegian company based in Oslo,” said Faamoetauloa Tafilelea Faavae Gagamoe, executive director of the Tamarix Group.
“He mentioned that it was important for the South Pacific to be able to predict its own future and form its own views, consistent with those generally formed outside the Pacific. This was consistent with some of the work Tamarix was already doing to promote technological solutions in Samoa, so it all made sense.”
The work builds on training Vaaelua received in 2019 and later training provided by a team of researchers and visionaries at the Silicon Valley-based Institute for the Future (IFTF) in February 2024, hosted by a team from the Tamarix Group, hosted by KPMG.
It then began to build multiple forecasting partnerships across the South Pacific, with plans to open an office first in Samoa.
Tafilelea said the local base in Samoa was vital to this multifaceted collaboration. Meta Apu’ula was appointed as the Managing Director of Tamarix Samoa, highlighting its presence in Samoa.
Apuula held a number of senior roles in the New Zealand Government before returning to Samoa where she currently resides in Nofoali, continuing her work in the field of female leadership.

Samoa Strategic Futures Office
According to Tafila, many countries in Europe, Asia and America have strategic futures offices responsible for creating foresight, which leads to insights and actions.
“The lack of such forecasts for the South Pacific is worrying because this is the region most affected by climate change. Therefore, building forecasts and foresight is important for leaders in both the public and private sectors,” said Tafilea.
The launch also includes two other initiatives. These include the Tamarix Technical College, which will be launched in the village of Putasi in Fale Alili, and the Gig Eco Tech – GET Zone, which will teach skills to digital learners and help them take up “gigs” or small tech jobs to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills.
Samoa’s top chief issues warning
Poutasi and Falealili Senior Chief Tuatagaloa Joe Annandale acknowledged the initiative and foresight of the technology institute in his village. However, he warned of the social impact of technology and the skills and knowledge that needs to be acquired, especially by young people, and the impact on Samoan culture, given the negative impact that social media has had on Samoan society.
The Tamarix Group offices are located on the ground floor of the Vodafone Building in Maluafou.
