New Delhi: Indian police said on Sunday (May 26) that a fire at a children’s hospital in the Indian capital killed six newborn babies and people rushed into the blaze to save the babies.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the fire and deaths “heartbreaking” in a social media post.
The fire department was alerted to a fire that broke out in a Delhi hospital on Saturday evening.
But in the crucial first few minutes, bystanders spotted the fire and bravely rushed out to rescue the newborn.
“All 12 newborn babies were rescued from the hospital with the help of others,” senior police officer Surendra Choudhary said in a statement, but added that six of them had died when they were taken to the hospital for treatment.
