Members of the Maribor Ice Hockey and Skating Club (HDK Maribor) will compete in the Austrian Ice Hockey League – Österreichische Eishockey Liga (ÖEL) in the 2024/25 season. They enter the new season under the guidance of a new coach. 37-year-old former hockey player Jure Verlič, brother of the better-known Miha Verlič, has taken over as coach.
The advantage of the new coach is that he knows the mentality of the players participating in the Maribor team very well. “In the upcoming season we will enter a new league, which gives us new impetus and opens a new chapter in members’ hockey in Maribor. In individual meetings with the players we present our plans and the direction we want to guide the members. Together with the players we strive to create a positive atmosphere in the club and set high standards for the future.” Yuri Werlich.
The members of Maribor Ice Hockey Club presented and confirmed the innovations for the new season at the regular membership meeting of Maribor Ice Hockey Club. The club management decided to participate in the OEEL based on the specific situation of the participating teams.
“Our team is made up of very dedicated hockey players who, unfortunately, do not have professional contracts that would allow them to live a carefree everyday life. This makes it difficult to form a team for a midweek match in Jesenice or Kranj, for example, which starts at 6pm, when they have their days off, but unfortunately in this case we have to form a team from trainees and teenagers, which is not good for anyone,” he explained. Luka JuricChairman of the HDK Maribor Expert Committee. “A key factor in our decision was the fixed match times, as the matches will be played on weekends, which will make it easier for our players to balance their commitments.”
Maribor’s first match in the ÖEL League will take place on Saturday, October 12. EHC Kundl, WSG Wattens Pinguins, SC Hohenems, Dornbirn Bulldogs, EHC Lustenau, ATSE Graz, HDK Maribor, Kapfenberger SV, UEHV Traunsee Sharks Gmunden and the ice club from Vienna will play in the Austrian Hockey League.
The financial report of Maribor FC was also presented at the general meeting and the year ended with a smaller deficit than it would have otherwise been, thanks to regular contributions from sponsors and donors, as well as the Maribor Municipality.
Of all the selected teams, the Maribor Hockey Centre was the most satisfied with the performance of its members last season. The HDK Maribor Women’s Team won the title of National Ice Hockey Champions again last season. With this achievement, they won the title for the seventeenth time, putting them on a par with the most successful sports teams in the city of Maribor.
Last season, the women’s team from Maribor participated in the DEBL International Championship Extended Tournament for the first time, against teams from Austria and Hungary, finishing fifth, and also participated in the WIHL International League, finishing second. Next season, they will participate in both the domestic championship and the extended international DEBEL Championship.
