– A special task force will be set up

President Irfaan Ali said yesterday that the government was awaiting information on the alleged smuggling of about 10,000 kilograms of gold from Guyana, a move that led to the imposition of sanctions on Mohammed, and that it was already considering tightening regulations to achieve “greater stringency”.

He announced that the government had suspended all business ties with the Mohammed family and said the information provided by the United States would help assist and guide local investigations.

“The Minister of Finance, the Commissioner of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Director General, the Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), the Governor of the Central Bank and the Guyana Gold Board are reviewing the existing system and looking at areas where it can be further strengthened,” Ali said at a press conference at the Presidential Palace yesterday.
