On the streets of Nuku’alofa, people are rushing to build two hundred shipping container homes to provide much-needed accommodation for this year’s Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting, which will be held in August.

Prime Minister Huacahuameliku Shosi Sovalenei even asked residents to open their private homes to visitors. More than a thousand rooms would be needed to fully accommodate the visitors attending the event.

“Basically, we have booked some accommodations such as those that are available in Tanoa and others. We have also sent expressions of interest to private houses that really want to rent out their houses,” the Prime Minister said.

Mia Ramanlal, a resident who is renting out her family home, is rushing to get it ready in time.

“We rent it out for about seven days… We bought everything and staffed it all at once and had to hire extra workers to help us get ready,” Ramanlal said.
