The 72-year-old discusses his illness and his latest film project Accepted a large interview with Spanish AS.

Van Gaal has had a prolific career as a manager at some of the world’s biggest football clubs, including Barcelona and Manchester United.

He also served as head coach of the Dutch national team no less than three times. In recent years, however, there has been a huge effort to fight prostate cancer.

Van Gaal told AS that despite the difficult conditions, he is in good health.

– I lived with this disease for more than three years, through radiation, hormone injections, surgery, catheters and urine bags. It was unbelievable, the Dutchman admits, but I coped well.

He further questioned whether cancer had changed the way he viewed life.

– Not much, really. I come from a family of nine brothers and sisters. I am the youngest. My father died when I was 11. He was 53 years old when he died. On the other hand, my first wife died when she was 39. All my brothers died prematurely. I am used to death, he says, adding:

– That’s why I know that death is a part of life and you can deal with it.

Van Gaal said he gained the will to fight when the cancer diagnosis landed in his legs. At the same time, he knows that everyone has their own way of dealing with the situation. The star coach’s advice is simple:

– be yourself.

The battle with cancer did not dampen the spirit of the former Manchester United manager. In an interview with AS, he was challenged to say that he looked fine. The answer came with a big smile:

– I always look young, that’s why I look good.

Proceeds from the documentary will go toward oncology research.
