The obligation applies to classes in the US state of Louisiana. It is the first law of its kind in the US.
The Ten Commandments, which are important in Christianity and Judaism, will have to be posted in classrooms in Louisiana schools in the future, according to a law signed by Republican Governor Jeff Landry on Wednesday, AFP reported.
From kindergarten to university
“If you want the law to be respected here, you have to start with the original law — that’s the law that Moses brought,” Landry said as he signed the law.
The law, the first of its kind in the United States, requires that all state-funded educational institutions, from kindergarten to college, must display the Ten Commandments from 2025.
The Ten Commandments must be in the form of a poster or framed document measuring at least 28 x 35.5 cm and printed in “large, easy-to-read font.” Production of the poster will be funded by donations.
Agence France-Presse pointed out that this move may further intensify the debate on the separation of church and state in the United States. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has announced that it will take legal action against the law, calling it “clearly unconstitutional.” She mentioned the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which prohibits the establishment of a state religion or favoring one religion over another.
Texas, Oklahoma and Utah have also considered similar laws.
