Before resigning as MP for Mahalapye East, Boko had announced his candidacy for the constituency.

49 days before announcing his immediate resignation, former Mahalapye East MP Yandani Boko had actually informed the Botswana National Front constituency committee that he planned to run for re-election. He was so serious that he even filled out all the relevant documents and paid the P4,000 registration fee.

Boko is a member of the Bangladesh National Front (BNF), a major partner in the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) project. The BNF was allocated the Mahalapye East constituency under the constituency allocation agreement reached in 2019, which runs until 2024. On January 18 this year, the constituency committee held a meeting and asked interested parties to declare their intention to run. Among those present were three people who expressed their intention to run for a parliamentary seat: Boko, Lawrence Chipana and Augustine Nyatanga. The latter had been living and working in Orapa. Boko and Chipana were able to prove their BNF membership by producing the required documents, but Nyatanga could not and was disqualified by the committee. This gave Boko and Chipana the opportunity to run.
