NEW DELHI — Six newborn babies died in a fire at a children’s hospital in the Indian capital as people rushed into the blaze to save the infants, police said Sunday.
“All 12 newborn babies were rescued from the hospital with the help of others,” senior police officer Surendra Choudhary said in a statement, but added that six of them had died when they were taken to the hospital for treatment.
“We are taking legal action against the hospital owners,” Chaudhry said.

He did not provide further details about the children’s deaths.
In addition to the six fatalities, a baby was among the 12 people rescued from the suffocating smoke who died before the fire broke out, Choudhury said, without elaborating.
A fire broke out at the Neonatal Care Hospital in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area on Saturday night.

Delhi Fire Department Director General Atul Garg told the Press Trust of India (PTI) that they have sent 14 fire engines to put out the fire.
“The fire spread too fast due to explosion of oxygen cylinder,” he told PTI.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the situation “heartbreaking”.
“We all stand with those who lost innocent children in this accident,” he said on social media.
“The cause of the incident is under investigation and anyone responsible for this negligence will not be let off.”
