Government assures ‘not giving up’ on review of PSP risk supplement

The Secretary of the Interior, Telmo Correia, assured today in Leiria that the Guardianship Agency still “has not given up” on the review of risk grants for PSP agents.

During a ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of the creation of the PSP Regional Command in Leiria, Telmo Correia recognized that “the value (of agents) is necessary and the strengthening of human resources necessarily involves the attractiveness of the profession and the value of those who work in the police force. Security”.

“Especially starting with the risk supplementary review, improving the compensation plan. This is a critical issue and it is worth noting that we have not given up,” the government official stressed.

The Secretary of State believes that the changes being promoted by the Ministry of the Interior (MAI) “will guarantee greater safety for Portuguese people while contributing to the prestige of the Public Security Police”.

Telmo Correia said: “We are reorganizing the operations of the PSP to guarantee increased close and visible policing, which involves more street-level agents”.

Another goal is to ensure “a police force with better working conditions and better facilities”, “more modern, better equipped, more technological, more dignified and more valuable”.

“We want a faster and more effective police force. In 2023, the Leiria Regional Command was called to an average of 33 incidents per day. Although violent crime has fallen, the region still has the fourth highest overall crime rate, according to the Annual Internal Security Report,” said Telmo Correia.

The governor also revealed that he intends to bring “police closer to citizens.”

“Training and awareness-raising actions on issues such as drug use and trafficking, dating violence, harassment or incitement to hate crimes are an important part of these programs aimed at keeping young students safe, while also helping, in time, to develop more aware and responsible citizens”, he stressed.
