Gautam Gambhir is the only applicant for the high-profile post of India’s next head coach and he is tipped to bag the job, media reports said on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old is a brilliant left-handed batsman who has scored more than 10,000 runs in international matches across the three formats and recently led the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title.

According to Indian media reports, applications for the top post closed on May 27 and Gambhir was the only candidate to sign up.

Gambhir entered politics after retiring in 2018.

In 2019, he was elected as an MP for Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s Hindu nationalist party but quit politics in March to coach the Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

The Indian Express quoted BCCI sources as saying that his interview is scheduled for Tuesday and that he is the “only candidate who applied”.

The Times of India called him the “presumed front-runner”.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made any official comment on the process.

The Indian team’s head coach is currently Rahul Dravid, but as he has decided not to stay on, the post of head coach will be vacant after the T20 World Cup.

India is looking for a replacement till the next 50-over World Cup in 2027.

India has not won the world championship since 2013 when it won the Champions Trophy under the last foreign coach, Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher.

Local media initially reported that apart from Gambhir, former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer were also being considered for the post.

But Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, denied the reports and issued a statement saying no Australian had received a coaching offer.
