Israeli official: Netanyahu disbands his internal war cabinet

Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Israeli officials said on Monday they had dissolved their six-member wartime cabinet, a move that was widely expected after centrist former general Benny Gantz quit the government.

Netanyahu is expected to consult on the Gaza war with a small group of ministers, including Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a former member of the wartime cabinet.

The prime minister faces demands from nationalist and religious partners in the coalition — Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir — that he join a war cabinet, a move that would increase tensions between the prime minister and international partners, including the United States.

The forum, which was formed after Gantz joined Netanyahu to form a national unity government at the start of the war last October, also includes Gantz’s partner Gadi Eisenkot and Aryeh Deri, chairman of the religious Shas party, as observers.

Gantz and Eisenkot both resigned from the government last week, citing Netanyahu’s failure to develop a Gaza war strategy.
