Jamaica has achieved its 2030 target of protecting its land area five years ahead of schedule, according to a recent announcement by the Minister of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Senator Matthew Samuda.
The government has pledged to provide legal protection for 30% of the country’s terrestrial and coastal marine ecosystems by 2030.
The target is part of a broader strategy to tackle biodiversity loss and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Fulfilling global commitments
The country’s efforts are in line with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
In his speech at the Portmore Kiwanis Club’s 51st anniversary celebrations, Minister Samuda highlighted the success of initiatives such as the National Tree Planting Program, which have made a significant contribution to increasing forest cover and meeting international environmental commitments.

Advances in renewable energy
In addition to ecosystem protection, Jamaica has made significant progress in the renewable energy sector to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
A tender process is currently underway to build new plants with a total power generation capacity of 100 MW.
The Mona Reservoir floating solar project will be implemented in phases and will generate 45 MW of electricity, providing electricity to the entire Mona treatment plant complex.

Economic and climate benefits
The shift to renewable energy not only addresses environmental concerns but also brings economic advantages.
Minister Samuda noted that the removal of the battery tax and the falling cost of solar panels have made it financially viable for individuals and businesses to invest in solar energy.
Additionally, government investment in electric and liquefied natural gas buses is expected to reduce emissions and operating costs for the Jamaica Urban Transport Corporation (JUTC).
