PORT VILA, June 13, 2024 (ABC Pacific) – The European Commission is insisting on suspending its visa waiver scheme with the Pacific nation despite concessions from the Vanuatu government, an adviser to the government says.
The European Commission proposed late last week to make the visa suspension permanent, which could end the right of Vanuatu citizens to visit the EU visa-free.
There have long been concerns that Vanuatu’s passport sale scheme is being used to facilitate financial crime.
Vanuatu’s special envoy for international development, Glenn Craig, who led an investigation into the passport scheme, said the work done by Vanuatu officials was not taken seriously.
