7 out of every 10 cars sold in Türkiye are imported

In the total Turkish car and light commercial vehicle market, in the first five months of this year, the share of imported cars in sales was 61.79%, while the share of Turkish-produced cars was 38.20%.

According to data compiled by the Automotive Dealers and Mobility Association (ODMD), car and light commercial vehicle sales rose 6% in the first five months of the year, with 471,743 new vehicles sold by the end of May.

During the same period, car sales increased by 10.25% to 375,000 units97, while light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 7.9% to 96,000 units646.

Domestic import sales data

From January to May this year, domestic car sales were 146,000 units 727, market sales were 471,000 units 743. Imported car sales were determined to be 325,000 units 16.

During the period, sales of domestically produced cars accounted for 31.11%, while sales of imported cars accounted for 68.89%.

Domestic share is declining

Over the past five years, the share of imported cars in sales has been higher than the share of Turkish-made cars in the market.

ODMD data shows that as of the end of last year, domestically produced cars accounted for 35.20% of total sales, while imported cars accounted for 64.79%.

The domestic sales rate was 43.89% in 2021 and dropped to 43.81% at the end of 2022.

In 2020, domestically produced cars accounted for 45.72% of total sales, while imports accounted for 54.27%. In 2019, domestic production accounted for 43.01% and imports accounted for 56.98%.

Fiat sold 58,000 212 vehicles in the car and light commercial vehicle market in January-May, including 50,000 501 vehicles produced in Turkey, ranking first in the domestic sales ranking.

Fiat was followed by Renault with total sales of 53,008 708 and domestic production of 38,00285, and Toyota with total sales of 23,006 651 and domestic production of 16,00118.

Hyundai ranked fourth with domestic sales of 15,00247 units out of a total of 24,00380 units, and Ford ranked fifth with domestic sales of 14,00727 units out of a total of 37,00313 units.

Togg’s total sales were reported at 11,002 288 units.

Import and sale of selected brands

German automaker Volkswagen ranked first in the import sales list in the Turkish auto market with sales of 35,168 units in five months.

Volkswagen was followed by Chery with 990 units sold for 26,000, Peugeot with 193 units sold for 26,000, Citroen with 28 units sold for 24,000 and Ford with 586 units sold for 22,000.
