Three incumbents re-elected to Broward County Commission

Three current Broward County commissioners will retain their seats on the county commission after the November election.

Commissioners Steve Geller, Hazel Rogers and Michael Udine will be re-elected. Along with them, Alexandra Davis, currently Miramar’s deputy mayor, will be elected uncontested to the County Board, her first time serving on a county commission.

The candidate qualification period ends on Friday, with the final results on Election Supervisor Website Until Saturday.

This will be the first time the Broward County Commission will have two Jamaican Americans occupy seats: Hazelle Rogers and Alexandra Davis.

In Miramar, Davis has a long history of public service, having served as a commissioner since 2010, with a brief hiatus from November 2014 to March 2019 to run for the County Commission. She will now represent the county’s District 7, which includes Hollywood, Miramar, Pembroke Pines and parts of tribal lands. The seat is currently held by Commissioner Tim Ryan, who resigned due to term limits. Commissioners can serve up to three consecutive four-year terms.

One region remains undetermined

Still to be decided in November is the race for Broward County Commission District 1, which serves Weston and Miramar, Pembroke Pines and parts of Southwest Ranches. The incumbent mayor is Nan Rich, and his opponent is Herbert Vargas.

Broward County commissioners oversee county services such as libraries, regional parks, taxation, property assessments, transit, Port Everglades, the medical examiner’s office and the airport. They also write the county budget, which determines the tax rates for property owners.

Udine represents District 3, which serves parts of Coral Springs, North Fort Lauderdale, Parkland, Sunrise and Tamarac.

Rogers represents the 9th District, which includes parts of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Oakland Park, Plantation and Sunrise.

Geller represents District 5, which includes the city of Davie, all of Cooper City, parts of the unincorporated area, Plantation, Southwest Ranch, Sunrise and tribal lands north of Sterling Road, which includes the Guitar Hotel and the Hard Rock Hotel.

The terms of the other commissioners in Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 will end in 2026.
