France will try to gain EU approval for import duties on Chinese electric vehicles and intends to take similar measures on solar and wind turbines imported from the Asian country.
French Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire made this statement yesterday in an interview with Radio Sud.
“Every member state must understand that this power relationship must be re-established with China,” the official said, confirming that France will vote in favor of the European Commission’s proposal to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports announced on Wednesday. The percentage fell to 38.1%, taking into account that the support provided distorts competition with European manufacturers.
Bruno Le Maire also said his country would work to convince other member states that a qualified majority is needed on the issue, especially Germany, which has publicly voiced opposition due to concerns about retaliation from China, a major destination market for German exports, especially in the automotive sector.
The French minister, who is campaigning for early legislative elections in France, also said he hoped the European Commission would take the same approach with regard to solar panels and wind turbines imported from China.
