Sweden has freed a former Iranian “prison” official in exchange for Tehran’s release of two people, including a European Union diplomat.
Iranian citizen Hamid Nouri was sentenced to life imprisonment in Sweden for his role in the mass killing of Iranian political prisoners in 1988. Nouri was part of a jury indicted in 1367 for extrajudicial killings.
Nouri was arrested at Stockholm Airport in 2019 and accused of torturing and mass killings of political prisoners in Gohardasht Prison, Radio Azadi Europe reported.
Sweden said Johan Flodros, a Swedish citizen who had worked as a diplomat for the European External Action Service, and Saeed Aziz, an Iranian-Swedish national, were freed on Saturday, Gemini 26, in a prisoner swap deal between the two countries.
It is not yet clear under what conditions the prisoner exchange took place.
But according to a statement carried by Oman’s state news agency, it appears to be the result of Omani mediation.
