Nemo at Zurich Pride: The superstar is back

Nemo performed in Switzerland for the first time since winning the Eurovision Song Contest and once again delivered. But the homecoming celebrations were low-key.

Until about 11pm, Zurich’s Landiwiese was full, the organizers said it could hold 9,000 people, and it was full. Then, virtually, in the fog on the stage: Nemo, wearing a baseball shirt with a rainbow print and an oversized faux fur hat on his head that has become an icon. Thousands of phones lit up in video mode.

Before Nemo sings, there is an announcement – because if not here, then at the biggest festival of the queer community. «We exist! No matter how many people don’t want to acknowledge us, we will always exist. We will stay,» Nemo says. Cheers, Nemo raises his fist, and the strings start.

Then it became political.

Then Nemo delivered something beyond what was expected. The performance of “Password” was nearly ten minutes long, with a fully utilized, spherical introduction. The vocals were perfect, 100%, just like they were the last time Nemo performed the song. But now the mood wasn’t quite right either. Cell phones were drawn throughout the performance, Nemo is a Swiss superstar, and if there is such a thing in Switzerland, he needs to be seen and captured in some way. The applause ended slightly later when Nemo shouted the final “ooh-oh-oh” forcefully into the microphone and the song ended.

Nemo spoke again and once again politely thanked the crowd. But the crowd seemed to be there mainly to see Nemo. The atmosphere remained calm but friendly, just like June Night itself, which was the result of hype, mainly related to the event but also possibly to the people, their music and its content. Only at the very front of the stage was the non-binary flag raised and the cheers a little longer. There were actually Nemo fans too.

There was an encore, and Nemo was briefly questioned on stage. “It’s nice to be home again,” Nemo said. Things got political again when the host asked Nemo what his plans were for the meeting with federal MP Beat Jans on June 18. The most important thing was to advance the entry of third genders. But this might take a lot of time. What could be implemented immediately: “More safety and more visibility for non-binary and trans people.”

Then Nemo jogged off the stage, waving and thanking everyone. The host said, “Are you ready to party?” The music started again.

The morning before the Landivis show, Nemo shared the dates for the upcoming European tour; with concerts in Germany, England, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Nemo hopes to give fans a show they will “remember for a lifetime”. What happens when Nemo sings more and the new songs are longer than ten minutes, can also be experienced at the festivals in Switzerland in the summer. The club concerts that Nemo will play in this country in the autumn are almost all sold out. A different audience will be waiting.
