St. Kitts and Nevis signs $620,000 shrimp and red snapper production pilot project with FAO support

(Ministry of Agriculture, Basseterre, St. Kitts, 14 June 2024): To strengthen the fisheries and agriculture sectors, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has launched a groundbreaking initiative with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP). The $620,000 project focuses on the production of shrimp and red snapper and is scheduled to run from June 2024 to May 2026.

The announcement marks an important milestone in the country’s quest for sustainable development. By leveraging expertise and resources provided by FAO, Saint Kitts and Nevis aims to address key challenges facing its marine and agricultural sectors.

The shrimp and red snapper production pilot project represents a multi-pronged approach to boost local economic development while ensuring the long-term survival of natural resources. Through innovative technologies and strategic investments, the government hopes to empower coastal communities and protect their livelihoods from environmental uncertainty.

“We are delighted to partner with FAO to launch this transformative initiative,” said Minister of Agriculture Samar Duggins. “By leveraging their support and expertise, we aim to realize the full potential of the fisheries and agriculture sectors, building resilience and prosperity for future generations,” he added.

The project will last for two years, during which stakeholders will work closely together to implement best practices in aquaculture and fisheries management. Training programs and capacity-building initiatives will equip local fishermen and farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to maximize productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
