In recent years, an increasing number of European manufacturers have used Chinese-made parts in their vehicles, sometimes even exporting complete vehicles from China.
A U.S. Senate report offers a glimpse into the dark corners behind such exits. The report said Chinese-made parts used in cars sold in the United States by BMW, Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover were subject to forced labor, including in factories that employed prisoners, some with political connections and even children.
The report even claims that some manufacturers received warnings about the source of parts from the suppliers from which they sourced them, but continued to use them on production lines. According to the Senate Finance Committee report, this is a communications component that allows a vehicle’s electronic systems to transmit information between them. The component is produced by Jingweida Technology Group (Sichuan JWD) and supplied to the manufacturer by US electronics supplier Lear Group. Back in January, Lear sent warnings to the three manufacturers about the source of the parts.
