An eyewitness told Reuters that explosions were heard near the capital Kiev on Friday morning as air raid sirens sounded in a military warning of a possible Russian missile attack, AFP reported.

“Air defense forces are working in the Kiev region. Stay in the shelters! The danger of missile attacks remains,” Mayor Vitaly Klichoko told residents of the Ukrainian capital.

Reuters noted that it was not clear whether the explosion was caused by an anti-aircraft missile. According to Ukrainian media reports, Suspilne TV quoted locals as saying that explosions were also heard in the Khmelnytskyi region in the west of the country, which was also the target of Russian bombing last night.

After the air raid sirens were sounded, the air defense forces said long-range missiles were launched from the Khmelnytskyi region and called on Kiev residents to go to shelters.

Kanal 24 television reported, citing a Telegram channel monitoring the attack, that it was a Kinjal ballistic missile heading in the direction of Kiev.

The military later said the air raid alert had ended, but there was no further official information.

According to EFE, the Ukrainian Air Force announced in a report on Friday that Russia launched a joint attack on Ukrainian territory last night, using 14 missiles of various types and 17 kamikaze “Shahed” drones.

All drones and seven missiles were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses. The interceptions took place in the regions of Nikolaev and Odessa (southern), Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovograd (centre), Zaporizhia (southeast) and Kharkiv (northeast).

The seven missiles destroyed were Kh-101 and Kh-555 cruise missiles. Three more missiles, one Kinjal hypersonic missile and three Iskander-M ballistic missiles, could not be shot down by air defense systems, EFE noted.

Air Force representative Ilya Yevlash said that the enemy specifically hit the Zaporizhia region with three ballistic missiles, adding that Russia was specifically targeting western Ukraine. That is why Poland raised fighter jets from the ground.

The Polish military reported that “it was another very tense night” for the entire Polish air defense system due to the activities of the Russian long-range aviation, which attacked targets in the west using cruise missiles and Shahed drones. According to Ukrainian media, he sent a message to the Polish Armed Forces’ combat command on the X social network.
