Residents of Panevėžys who raise children in kindergarten and primary schools will receive a not-so-pleasant surprise this September – they are set to increase taxes to cover institutional needs for kindergartens and extended day schools.

The city government believes that such price increases are no longer inevitable and that kindergarten fees, even if increased, will still be the lowest among major cities.

The Association of Headmasters of Pre-schools in Panevėžys applied to the city to increase fees by at least a few euros to meet the needs of the institutions.

According to its chairman, director of the kindergarten “Rūta” Regina Mikalauskienė, this monthly fee of 11.5 euros has not been raised since 2022, but almost everything has become more expensive during this period.

Preschool institutions use the funds raised to provide themselves with teaching, educational and hygiene tools, repair groups and communal spaces, purchase furniture or equipment for outdoor playgrounds and cover various expenses.

“Over the past year, the prices of construction materials and works have increased several times, daily necessities such as detergents and cleaners have increased by 20-30%, and teaching aids have become extremely expensive. After a survey of all childcare institutions in the city, we received responses from 25 of them that the institutions’ water and electricity bills should be increased by at least 5% due to a lack of funds to pay for the most needed items or bills,” said R. Mikalauskienė.
