The State District Attorney’s Office today requested permanent attention to the Office of Services Alberto Ezequiel Estrella Arias was one of three brothers involved in the attack on the Banco Popular, located on Luperón Avenue, corner Olof Palme.
The accused, Alberto Ezequiel Estrella Arias, teamed up with the already subdued Jorge Luis Estrella Arias and Eddy Enmanuel Segura Arias, the late Richard Michel Estrella Arias and Johan Belliard Aybar alias Berbera, to carry out attacks on financial institutions, wherein they stole a total of $1,685,723.68, on June 3, 2024, upon the request of Ernis Josue Mella Medina, prosecutor of the Criminal and Property Crimes (Theft) Investigation Department.
The investigation detailed that Alberto Ezequiel played an important role in carrying out the robbery by renting a Jeep, Kia brand, Sorento model, black color, to use during the attack. In order to avoid being identified, he provided false information about the client who was supposed to use the vehicle and avoided signing a rental contract.
During the process of renting and subsequently returning the vehicle, the defendants maintained constant communication with the owner, Manuel Antonio Matos Reyes, sending proof of payment and coordinating the extension of the lease after the theft.
Likewise, in order to divert the investigation, he suggested listing his late brother as the person who rented the vehicle on the grounds that “The dead can’t speak”.
The request for preventive detention was based on the seriousness of the crimes alleged, the presence of evidence directly linking Alberto Ezequiel Estrela Arias to the attacks, and the risk of flight and obstruction of the course of justice.
The Office of Resident Concern is scheduled to be notified of the request at 9:00 a.m. this Friday.
