The King’s Representative of the Cook Islands, His Excellency
Dear President and Saint of the Old Boys and Girls Association of Aweil.
Dear Principal, teachers and the Headmaster of Aweil Co-educational School.
The sanctity of God’s appointed workers is also the highest sanctity of Samoa who gather on this day.
“Now the poor sailor’s voice has broken and the captain’s water has boiled. When the sailor on the coast has successfully landed on land, it has also been thrown onto the smiling head of reputation. Now what the proverb wants to say is, let the praise of God signal in heaven, for this is where the hope of the tree of life has been fulfilled. So now we look at the jokes and we see the beauty in them. Because it was God who led the way in your life, today, in the celebration of your hundredth birthday, your hopes are fulfilled.
“Thank you for giving me this opportunity and I want to say some encouraging words for the centenary or one hundredth anniversary of our Aweil College.
With great respect; softened so I can speak, but I am not an old boy of our school. But I tell you, when I was a child, I always wanted to study in Aweile because I heard good things about the college that my mother’s brother was in Aweile and lived there permanently. I believe when he traveled to the United States and returned to school, he was one of the first old boys of Aweile to receive a doctorate. Later, he became the senior pastor of Manu Afaleiso in American Samoa until his retirement.
“I didn’t go to school in Aweil because my father’s Catholic sisters wanted me to become a priest when I grew up. But my LMS mother wanted me to go to the priests’ college in Maruya so that I could become a priest like my brother.
“I started out in the same school district of Aana in Vailuutai where all the children from Falesiu to Falelatai studied. In those days, walking to school was tiring as there were not many buses and cars available. Then I had the opportunity to attend Samoa College and subsequently Maruia College as per my mother’s wish. Then through God’s love, the rest of life continued until today. We are all gathered here to celebrate this important day of the 100th anniversary of Aweile College, a school that is loved by Samoa.
“The question is, why is Avila loved?
The annual University Parade arrives at Government House in Apia and the flag of the Samoan Independent Government is raised.
“Because the University is where I learned, my brothers and sisters, children, relatives and dear friends. We are proud of it because it has produced some outstanding and effective leaders in Aweile, such as the first Speaker of Samoa; some Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament; some heads of government ministries and organizations; some church leaders, senior pastors, shareholders and God-ordained workers; some are doctors, lawyers, auditors, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Samoa and other senior officials; some are businessmen, developers and farmers; some leaders and masters in Ahoida and Ararafaga.
“You have contributed so much to the government, the church, the business, the village and the country as a whole. As well as participating in various school sports and international sports around the world, especially winning rugby championships for many years in a row, you play with a strong style, play hard and want to win.
“The blessing of your knowledge and wisdom has also reached the Pacific Islands and we are here for this ceremony with the Cook Islands representatives. The Honourable Tom Masters and the good lady. Your record is great, Avila, your service has reached the century mark. It is smooth and solid.’ He agreed to go.
“Hats off to those who banned chainsaws and built this academy for children in Samoa and other Pacific countries. Hats off to the teachers and principals who are working hard to make the underprivileged generation wise and BroadCast Unitedligent. Thank you to the parents who encourage their children to get an education because it is their future and their contribution to the different parts of Samoa, now and tomorrow. Congratulations and thank you.
“Although in these first 100 years, many national dignitaries who have gone ahead and continue to be educated in Aweil, as well as principals and people who work as teachers in Aweil have gone through such a journey, please always remember and cherish them and their efforts, and their work.
“Let us always pay tribute and praise to our Great Teacher in Heaven. Avila, when your ways are successful, do not forget God. When you gain wisdom, do not forget God; when you gain strength, do not forget God. When you gain wealth, do not forget God. Let us remember the will of our God on this page, so that the wise man will not be proud of his knowledge, the strong man will not be proud of his strength, and the rich man will not be proud of his possessions; let him be proud of this when he is not proud, when he thinks and knows me, who am the Lord, exercising love, justice and righteousness in the world; for these are the things I delight in, says the Lord.
“Days like this remind us that our journey in this life is like the journey of God’s chosen nation, the nation of Israel. When faced with hardship, God is the only hope. But when it becomes lazy, God is abandoned and forgotten. This was the spirit of God’s command to the Israelites, before crossing the Jordan River to the land of Canaan, (Deuteronomy 8:11-14) Do not forget that the LORD is your God, until you keep His commandments, His ordinances, and His laws, which I declare to you today; when you have eaten and are full, and have built houses and live in them; whether your herds and your flocks increase, whether your silver and your gold increase, and everything you have increases; then you will be exalted and will forget the LORD your God, who brought you to the land of Egypt and made you a slave there.
“Avir, this is God’s will for all of us. When we are blessed and exalted, never forget Him. Let us continue to walk with Him and we will surely prosper. For He is our shield, He is our glory, and He is the One who lifts our heads up.
“May God bless Aweil as you celebrate your 100th birthday and bless you for your service to Samoa. May God bless the holiness and glory that is gathered on this holy day.
“Hooray and boom.”
