On Friday, a German woman who was likely suffering from mental problems attacked people on a bus with a knife near the city of Siegen, injuring six people, two of whom were still in critical condition.
Mayor Mayus said the tragedy could have been a much bigger one.
“But three women of immigrant backgrounds stopped the attackers and averted a wider tragedy.” The mayor said.
Albanian woman averts tragedy with far more consequences
Deutsche Welle has learned that the women who saved the bus from a greater tragedy are all of Albanian descent. They are AP, AB and B, RP. (The Albanian editorial department of Deutsche Welle also has their full names and photos, but due to their conditions and the shock they are experiencing, we will not publish them for the time being).
We spoke to B. RP and he explained what happened. They had gone to the party in the city of Siegen with their four children.
“We were having fun on the bus, having a good time, laughing and playing with the kids… Suddenly we heard a whistle. I saw a woman stabbing someone. She was also trying to attack our kids… AP grabbed the knife with his hands and together with AB caught and knocked the woman down. I grabbed the kids and quickly pulled them out… I returned to the bus and took a bag from the attacker… We took the knife from her and put her on the ground.
One grabbed her hands, the other grabbed her legs… At one point the woman screamed “ich erbege mich” (I surrender)… She sat on a seat in the bus and we made her wait there until the police came. .. There was blood all around the bus… It was horrible”in a telephone conversation with DW B. RP admitted that there were frequent pauses and hesitations during the conversation.
After getting off the bus, AP noticed a large stab wound on his hand. She and the other injured were immediately rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile, AP has been released from the hospital and is now in better health. But their friend is still great.
Handling by the authorities
B. RP. explained that they also visited the city hall. The mayor thanked them for the courage they showed and that many other would-be victims might have been saved.
On Friday night, they also received treatment from a psychologist, but fortunately, they were surrounded by their family. However, the fear and anxiety are still great. “Every time I close my eyes, I see those horrible images,” said B. RP./DW
