On August 31, 1989, the Chisinau Parliament (still under Soviet occupation) approved Romanian as the official language between the Prut and Dniester rivers, thus breaking the Russian stranglehold that the Moscow occupiers had on us. Therefore, for 35 years, the Republic of Moldova has officially celebrated Romanian Language Day on August 31.
But the road of Romanian in Bessarabia was not smooth. Crypto-communists returned to the government, included the concept of “Moldovan language” in the 1994 constitution, and many legal battles had to be fought to remove the so-called Moldovan language from the constitution and introduce Romanian.
Only almost 20 years later, our joint efforts to free the Romanian language from the captivity of Moldovan totalitarianism paid off with the ruling of the Constitutional Court of Chisinau (HCC No. 36 of December 5, 2013), which was based on a referral written by me – and which I defended in the High Court as a deputy of the Chisinau Parliament.
On this special day, we look back on the road we have traveled and celebrate the historic achievement of incorporating the Romanian language into the highest legal core of Chişinău (Article 13 of the Constitution).
Titled “Dismantling the stronghold of Moldovan nationalism”, the book “Legal Struggle for Bessarabian Romanian” represents my modest contribution to the protection and promotion of the linguistic and cultural identity of Bessarabian Romanians. With a foreword by Professor Dan Dungaciu, the book is more than just a book, but a living testimony of our commitment to the fundamental values of the Romanian nation.
Today, we remember with pride our resistance, the arguments presented to the Constitutional Court and the victory achieved for the Romanian language and our national identity. This is an opportunity to thank all those who fought alongside us in this battle and to look to the future with confidence.
According to Law No. 53/2013 Romania also established “Romanian Language Day” on August 31, so Romanian Language Day is celebrated on the same day on both sides of the Prut River.
With gratitude and hope, we celebrate this important day of our common identity!
Bessarabia is Romania!
