Luis Suarez scored twice in 20 MLS games to bring his season total to 16 as Inter Miami cruised to a comfortable 4-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday.
The Miami Heat were once again without Lionel Messi, who continued to miss time with an ankle injury, but they have already secured a playoff spot and remain atop the regular season Fans’ Shield.
However, there was no sign of Gerardo Martinez’s side letting up as Uruguayan star Suarez continued his impressive scoring form to secure a convincing win.
The 37-year-old former Barcelona forward opened the scoring for Miami in the 25th minute when his shot was blocked by Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady but flew into the net of helpless defender Tobias Salqvist.
One minute into the second half, Suarez cleverly exchanged blows with Diego Gomez before firing a low left-foot shot into the near post, breaking Brady’s defence.
The experienced striker made it 3-0 after scoring from close range after receiving a low pass from former Barca team-mate Jordi Alba.
Giorgios Koutsias pulled one back for Chicago in the 82nd minute, but Miami had it all over when Leonardo Campana broke down the right wing and passed the ball to substitute Robert Taylor. The Finnish winger made no mistake.
Defending champion Columbus Crew, fresh off their League Cup title, looked poised to advance to the Eastern Conference playoffs alongside Miami with a 4-2 win over New York City FC thanks to two stoppage-time goals.
Algerian player Mounsef Bakrar looked to have earned a point for NYCFC when he tied the score at 2-2 on a quick counterattack in the 86th minute.
But in the third minute of stoppage time, DeJuan Jones took advantage of New York’s defensive indecision to score, and then Jacen Russell-Rowe scored for the Columbus Crew, third in the Eastern Conference, to make it 4-2.
FC Cincinnati, playing without suspended Argentine Luciano Acosta, beat Montreal 4-1 and still led the Crew thanks to a brace from another Argentine, Luca Aureliano.
Aureliano scored the second goal in the 57th minute to make it 3-0 with a brilliant shot from inside his own half.
