Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Saturday that the Eiffel Tower will retain the Olympic rings it has adorned since June after the Paralympics.
“As mayor of Paris, the decision is mine and I have the consent of the International Olympic Committee,” Hidalgo told French daily Ouest France.
“So yes, they (the five rings) will remain on the Eiffel Tower,” she said, without specifying how long they would remain there.
She said five lighter rings of the same size would replace the one fixed to the French capital’s most iconic monument because the current one was “too heavy” to hold for long.
Hidalgo also reiterated her wish for the Olympic torch to remain in the Tuileries Gardens, but as the site is state property, President Emmanuel Macron will have the final say.
With Paris’ most iconic monuments providing a picturesque backdrop, the Games were held to widespread acclaim both at home and abroad.
Hidalgo hailed the success, saying the French had “fallen in love with Paris again” and that “Paris will never be the same again,” and expressed plans to allow swimming in parts of the Seine again by the summer of 2025.
