The Union Action Unit (UAS) strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Balsargo through the following statement, expresses its condolences to the families of the victims and to all the people of Burkina Faso. It also invites the Government to announce a provisional death toll and to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the service of their country.
Statement from UAS on the Balsalog terrorist attack
Since Saturday, August 24, 2024, the people of Burkina Faso are once again speechless! In fact, in Barsaloho – a town blockaded by terrorists in the province of Sanmatenga, 40 km from Kaya and 140 km from Ouagadougou – residents who were mobilized to dig trenches around the town were cowardly killed by terrorists. The terrorist group, the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for this brutal attack.
A government delegation went to the bedsides of the injured in Kaya on August 25, 2024, and another government delegation went to Barsarogo on August 26, 2024 to comfort the people.
In the absence of any official information from the authorities, different figures have been proposed about the scale of the massacre. Certain statements, such as the press release of the governor of Sanmateng, Naaba Koom, the pastoral letter of the Bishop of Kaya and the memorandum of the management of the Kaya Regional Hospital Center inviting all nursing staff to return to their posts because of an “emergency related to the arrival of a large number of patients”, provide clues to the scale of this tragedy. Everything indicates that the Balsarogo attack is the deadliest since the emergence of terrorism in Burkina Faso.
The Allied Operations Service (UAS) is deeply saddened by this tragedy:
– Strongly condemns this violent terrorist attack in Barsarogo;
– Expresses condolences to the families of the victims and all the injured people of Burkina Faso and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured;
– Calls on the people of Burkina Faso to redouble their solidarity and resilience in the face of ongoing terrorist attacks;
– Calls on the government to:
o Ensure adequate care for the wounded, survivors and residents of Barsarogo affected by the attack;
o Identify and punish the perpetrators and sponsors of the attacks;
o Communicate estimates of the number of fatalities, even if only provisional;
o Commemorate those who have sacrificed their lives for their country.
The UAS reaffirms its support for the DSS, the HDP and civilians who make great sacrifices every day in the fight against the terrorist hydra, often risking their lives, while inviting political and military authorities to question this strategy of reconquering territories to increase efficiency.
