Elon Musk officially announced the news in a post on Wednesday morning, while a website update is underway.
“Important change: your likes are now private,” Musk said, citing an explanation posted on the company’s account on Tuesday.
According to the post, users will still be able to see which posts they’ve liked and who has liked their posts, but will not be able to see who has liked someone else’s posts.
By Wednesday, the tabs on most users’ profiles showing posts they liked had disappeared.
The Verge first anticipated the change on Tuesday, and Musk confirmed the news by retweeting a screenshot of the article.
X’s engineering director Wang Haofei introduced the update in a May 21 post.
“Public likes can encourage the wrong behaviors,” Wang wrote. “For example, many people are reluctant to like potentially ‘bold’ content for fear of retaliation from trolls or to protect their public image. Soon, you’ll be able to like a post without worrying about who will see it.”
