Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) reaffirms its commitment to promote sports in the country through long-term sponsorship of schoolss’Athletic.
Over the past three years, the telecommunications giant has invested 6 million Lesotho dollars in the Lesotho Institutional Sports Association (LISA) Games, making a significant impact on the country’s youth and economy.
The Games were held at the Lesotho High School in Maseru earlier this month, with 63 schools from across Lesotho competing in 10 different sports including football, netball, basketball and volleyball.
Speaking oflesotho times This week, Econet marketing communications and client agency general manager Puleng ‘Mathabo Masoabi said the intensive three-day event not only showcased young talent but also boosted economic activity and community engagement across the country.
“The LISA Games have proven to be more than just a celebration of sportsmanship and athleticism; it has also become an economic engine that benefits all sectors of the country,” said Ms Masoabi.
Ms Masoabi added that during the Games, hawkers and petty traders did brisk business by selling food, drinks and merchandise to spectators, participants and organisers.
“The influx of customers has significantly increased their income, helped them support their families and contributed to the local economy,” she said.
Additionally, renting the sports fields at Lesotho High School for the Games also injected funds into the institution, ensuring that the facilities are maintained and improved for future use. She added: “We hired bus services to transport students to and from the competition venues, providing jobs for local drivers, their assistants and the transport industry in Lesotho.”
She said the influx of competitors and spectators has led to an increase in demand for catering services and accommodation for visiting teams and officials, benefiting local catering businesses and service providers.
“The awards and cash prizes given to outstanding athletes are far-reaching, and a portion of the prize money can be used to pay for tuition or other educational expenses. This financial support enables young athletes to continue their education while pursuing a career in sports.
“Besides the economic benefits, the LSAF Games also play a vital role in raising Lesotho’s profile on the international sports stage.
