Barbados and the State of Palestine formally established diplomatic relations on Tuesday, June 11, at a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Barbados to the United Nations in New York.
The move follows the Barbados government’s decision on April 19, 2024 to recognize the State of Palestine.
The joint communiqué was signed by Ambassador Francois Jackman, Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations, and Ambassador Riyad Mansour, Observer of the Permanent Observer Mission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Kerry Symonds said at the signing ceremony: “Barbados is proud to have reached this milestone in its relationship with the State of Palestine. Today, as we formalise our relationship with the State of Palestine, we are unequivocally supporting the Palestinian right to self-determination – the right of the Palestinian people to establish their own state of their own choosing.
“We are proud of the small impact this decision has had in the wider geopolitical sphere. Barbados’ decision has been closely watched in the region, with the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago also announcing their recognition of the State of Palestine. As a result of these developments, all Caribbean Community countries now recognize Palestine.”
Simmonds continued: “In addition, in the past two weeks, four European countries, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Spain, have also announced their recognition of the State of Palestine.
“With regard to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, Barbados reiterates its principled position calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in the war in Gaza. We have also reiterated our numerous calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and for the provision of all humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. We continue to believe that a ceasefire is necessary to achieve a broader settlement and lasting peace in the Middle East. In this regard, we welcome the United Nations Security Council’s decision on Monday to support peace efforts in the region.”
Barbados recognized the State of Palestine and established diplomatic relations with it, reinforcing its long-standing support for a two-State solution to the situation in the Middle East.
In this regard, Israel was one of the first countries with which Barbados established diplomatic relations in 1967. These relations remain close and friendly and have resulted in many examples of technical cooperation in a variety of fields.
