The $600 million state-of-the-art abattoir located at Onverwagt on the West Coast of Babes, Region Five has been completed, modernizing Guyana’s meat processing capabilities and bringing them up to international standards.

This is also expected to open up new markets for Guyanese beef.
Agriculture Minister Zulfiqar Mustafa made the remarks at a recent event.
The transformation project is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The facility will become Guyana’s main cattle slaughter area as Region Five is set to become the hub of the cattle industry.
“They conducted tests the other day and the contractor had to make some modifications. Once that is done, I will commission it soon,” the agriculture minister said.
He added that the abattoir would help improve the income of many cattle farmers and create more jobs.

This will complement the government’s efforts over the past four years to increase meat production and reduce meat imports.

Other initiatives being taken in the livestock sector include growing corn and soybeans, and artificial insemination (AI) of cattle to improve the country’s breeding stock.
These initiatives are aimed at helping Guyana achieve self-sufficiency and ensure local and regional food security. (Department of Public Information)
