The deputy governor is pushing for changes to the County Government Act to clearly define their duties and responsibilities.

Laikipia County Deputy Governor Reuben Kamuri has led at least eight deputy governors to discuss with the Senate Committee on Decentralization on how to increase their influence in county governance.

They complain that some governors assign executive duties to their key aides, leaving many deputies idle.

Lawmakers rejected a senator’s proposal to empower the governor to give them executive functions, preferring a more proactive approach. They suggested overseeing items such as disaster preparedness and chairing a subcommittee on all county governments.

They also requested a budget allocation for their office in order to enhance their supervisory capacity.

The Senate committee on decentralization is expected to submit a report on the proposals when the Senate reconvenes next month. The findings could reshape the duties of lieutenant governors in counties.
