Canadian mining company Lucara reportedly found the world’s second largest diamond (2,492 carats) in Botswana. Other notable diamond discoveries include:
– The largest car ever: Cullinan –
The largest gem-quality diamond ever found is believed to be the Cullinan diamond, which was discovered in South Africa in 1905 and weighed 3,106 carats.
One of the gems cut from it was the “Star of Africa”, which is one of the British Crown Jewels on display at the Tower of London.
– Dethroned: Rare –
The 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond was until Thursday the second-largest diamond in history.
In 2019, Lucara also mined the mine in Botswana.
Luxury goods group LVMH bought the tennis ball-sized diamond in January 2020 for Bernard Arnault, once the world’s richest man.

The 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond, about the size of a tennis ball, was also discovered by Lucara in Karowe, northeastern Botswana, in November 2015.
In September 2017, British jeweler Laurence Graff purchased it for $53 million.

Other high-quality diamonds have been discovered in Botswana over the past four years, including from Lucara (1,174 carats in June 2021, 1,080 carats in August 2023, 998 carats in November 2020) and Debswana, which is jointly owned by the South African government and diamond company De Beers (1,098 carats in June 2021).
– Excelsior Hotel –
The Excelsior Diamond was discovered in South Africa in 1893 and weighed 995 carats when uncut. The largest cut diamond weighed 69 carats and was purchased by jeweler Robert Mouawad in 1996.
– Sierra Leone Star –
The diamond was discovered in Sierra Leone in 1972 and weighs just under 969 carats. It yielded 17 stones, the largest of which weighed 53.96 carats.
– Lesotho –
British mining company Gem Diamonds said in January 2018 that it had discovered the 910-carat gem at its Letson mine in the landlocked southern African nation of Lesotho.
Unrivaled
The 890-carat gem was discovered in the 1980s in what was then Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) by a little girl playing near mine tailings outside her home. The largest stone cut from it weighed 407 carats. —AFP
