The Ministry of Land Survey, Planning and Natural Resources has announced that Tonga’s active volcano Hunga has been officially recognized as one of the “Second Batch of 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites”. The recognition was announced at the 37th International Geological Congress (IGC) held in Busan, South Korea on August 27, 2024.
The recognition highlights the extraordinary geological significance of the active volcano Hunga, which attracted global attention when it erupted in 2022. The eruption was one of the most significant in recent history, making the volcano one of the most important geological sites in the world.
Tonga’s Minister of Lands, Surveys, Planning and Natural Resources, Lord Tuiafitu, is extremely proud of this achievement. He said: “The inclusion of Hunga Volcano in the ‘Second Batch of 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites’ is a proud moment for Tonga. It highlights our country’s unique geological features and underscores the importance of conserving and studying these natural wonders. This recognition is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our local and international scientific communities.”
This achievement is the result of the collaborative efforts of the Pacific Community (SPC) Department of Geoscience, Department of Lands, Surveys, Planning and Natural Resources, and scientists from the region and beyond. Their combined expertise, both before and after the 2022 eruption, contributed to the global recognition of the significance of the active Mt. Hungga.
