The UN Fisheries for All Steering Committee met last week in Port Louis in the presence of Minister of Blue Economy Sudheer Maudhoo, EU Ambassador Oskar Benedikt and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Amanda Serumaga. The meeting was held to discuss the future of artisanal fishing in Mauritius.
The Program Ecological fishThe EU-UNDP programme aims to promote sustainable fishing practices and strengthen fishery resource management in East Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region. During the meeting, the minister detailed the three main components of the programme: the introduction of modern GPS navigation equipment, the installation of ice machines to improve fish conservation, and the development of a training programme to strengthen fishermen’s skills.
Ice-making machines will be installed from September, marking the start of various initiatives to support fishermen, while nearly 1,000 registration cards will be issued to fishermen and subsidies of up to Rs 6 million will be provided to six cooperatives to buy semi-industrial boats. “These measures are aimed at modernising the industry and reducing reliance on imports”designate the Minister.
EU Ambassador reaffirms EU support for implementation of the plan Ecological fishstressing that these initiatives are aimed at protecting the ocean while supporting the livelihoods of fishermen. Amanda Serumaga, for her part, pointed out that supporting artisanal fishing is at the heart of the plan, which emphasizes food security, inclusive growth and the creation of new jobs.
