Five players from the Uruguayan national team have been hit with heavy suspensions after a clash with Colombian fans during the Copa America. The heaviest punishment was imposed on Darwin Nunez, who was fined in addition to his suspension. Six other players were fined and an official from the Uruguayan Football Association was suspended for six months.
The ban on Uruguayan players only applies to national team matches.
In multiple videos, Darwin Nunez can be clearly seen clashing with Colombian fans in the stands. Although other players were involved in the incident, Nunez was the most prominent in the conflict.
The fact that the Uruguayans claimed they were trying to protect their family did not appear to be considered a mitigating factor.
Darwin Nunes received the harshest punishment – he was suspended for five games and had to pay a $20,000 fine.
In addition to Nunes, four of his other teammates were also suspended and fined.
Tottenham Hotspur player Rodrigo Bentancur was banned for four games and fined $16,000.
Matthias Olivera, Ronald Araujo and Josema Gimenez were each suspended three games and fined $12,000.
Sebastian Cáceres, Matías Weiner, Emiliano Martínez, Brian Rodriguez, Santiago Mele and Facundo Pellistri were each fined $5,000, while the Uruguayan Football Association was ordered to pay $20,000.
Uruguayan Football Association official Marcelo Garcia was banned for six months.
