The Burkina Faso Copyright Office (BBDA) will distribute the rights for August 2024 from Friday, August 30, 2024. This information was announced at a press conference on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. The royalties collected in 2023 and distributed in August 2024 total nearly 3 billion CFA francs, compared to more than 2 billion CFA francs in 2022. The net amount of rights distributed exceeds 1.247 billion CFA francs and will be distributed to 30,746 beneficiaries, of which 14,632 are BBDA members.
Under the distribution for August 2024, more than 1.247 billion CFA francs will be distributed to 30,746 beneficiaries, of which 14,632 are BBDA members. The distribution will begin on Friday, August 30, 2024, in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. The payment methods are: bank transfer, electronic payment, cheque. In addition to the payment of the August 2024 fees, the fees to be paid will also be paid (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, February and May 2024). The amount exceeds 1.5 billion CFA francs. The total amount collected between January 1 and June 30, 2024 exceeds 2.855 billion CFA francs, while the amount collected in 2022 is 2.355 francs and the amount distributed in 2023 is the BBDA statutory fees established in article 5 of 2020. -0394/MCAT/SG/BBDA adopts the distribution regulations of October 8, 2020. The August allocation covers mechanical reproduction rights (DRM), photocopy reproduction rights (DRO), neighbouring rights, remuneration for private copies (RCP) and rights originating abroad. DRM comes from royalties collected from publishers of programmes and videos (CDs, DVDs, USB keys) between January 1 and June 30, 2024, explains Delphine Somé, the distribution director. DRR comes from royalties collected by customs authorities for importers of equipment used to make photocopies of literary works. It is used for two categories of rights: published works and written journalistic articles. As for neighbouring rights, these are rights collected from ordinary users (radio, television, bars, restaurants, hotels, cinemas, kiosks, etc.).

Ms. Somé said that RCP is collected by the customs department from importers of equipment that allows the storage, recording or reproduction of literary and artistic works protected by the BBDA. Finally, rights of foreign origin are those arising from the exploitation of works in the BBDA repertoire abroad. Four sister companies, namely SACD, SUISA, PROLITERIS and ADAGP, assign their rights to the BBDA.

BBDA CEO Dr. Hamid aka Patindeda Patric LEGA was keen to point out that the increase in the amount collected does not mean an increase in the rights of all BBDA members. Dr. Lega believes that several factors must be combined in order to achieve a good distribution of rights. “The works must be the object of exploitation, the operators must pay royalties and finally the latter must submit to the BBDA a procedural statement or proof of their exploitation,” he elaborated. The BBDA CEO concluded by thanking all colleagues for their teamwork and once again thanking the men and women of the media for their support.
